How Medicare Works

Medicare is a federal insurance program that provides health insurance for people 65 and older and individuals younger than 65 that may qualify due to a disability. There are four different parts to Medicare — Part A, B, C, and D. Click the icons below to learn more about each part!

Medicare Part A is hospital coverage. It covers care you receive while an inpatient in a hospital or skilled nursing facility.

  • Inpatient care in a hospital
  • Skilled nursing facility care
  • Nursing home care (inpatient care in a skilled nursing facility that’s not custodial or long-term care)
  • Hospice care
  • Home health care

Medicare Part B is medical coverage. It covers doctor visits, clinic services, and care you receive as an outpatient.

  • Doctor Visits
  • Clinical research
  • Ambulance services
  • Durable medical equipment (DME)
  • Mental health
  • Limited outpatient prescription drugs

Medicare Part C is Medicare Advantage. These plans combine the coverage of Parts A and B into one plan. They often include prescription drug coverage, too.  They are privately managed and federally approved.  In addition to coverage of Part A and B, Part C may include:

  • Fitness Programs
  • Coverage for Dental, Vision, and Hearing
  • Telemedicine
  • Prescription Drug Coverage

Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage. Plans cover many medications that are prescribed by your doctor or other qualified health professionals.  These are privately managed and federally approved.

  • Provide discounts in-network and preferred pharmacies
  • Manage
  • Low-cost generic drugs
